Engaging Youth in Social Innovation

Engaging Youth in Social Innovation

Three upcoming Vancouver events are inviting young people to get engaged in social innovation.

On March 6, the British Columbia Advisory Council on Social Entrepreneurship with partners Young Women in Business and Global Agents for Change are hosting a Lightning Pitch event at HiVE Vancouver. The evening will feature 90-second presentations on some of the most exciting business ventures making a social or environmental impact from B.C.'s under-30 crowd, with the audience choosing its top pick.

David Cameron, one of the event organizers, says it’s an easy way for young people to learn about social innovation in a fun, relaxed environment. The event will include networking time to connect with a community of emerging and established social change leaders, as well as members of the Advisory Council on Social Entrepreneurship.

The council is also hoping to engage young people in providing feedback and recommendations for its upcoming report, released March 31, and are hosting a follow-up Speak Up! event March 10.

Vancity is seeking applications for its Good Money Impact Venture Challenge, which will award $90,000 to three students or graduate-run business that are financially sustainable and have positive social or environmental impact.

The deadline to apply for the Impact Venture Challenge is Friday, March 16, 2012.

We’re excited for both of these events, which along with Social Enterprise Dragons March 8, provide Vancouverites plenty of opportunities to learn and connect on how social innovation can help solve complex problems, from climate change to social issues.

We look forward to learning with you, and encourage you to share your experiences either working in the social innovation sector or as a participant at the events. To share blogs, photos and news, contact camille(at)axiomnews.ca.
