News program generates web traffic for Community Living
Keith Powell, the executive director of Community Living Ontario, says the traffic generated by his organization’s web-based news service is one of the reasons it was chosen as the vehicle for keep its members informed during strikes at associations across the province.
In a five minute video which has been posted online at www.communitylivingontario.ca, Community Living Ontario president Dianne Garrels-Munro talks about the support her organization is proving local associations during the strikes and actions to encourage labour peace.
“As a result of the work that Axiom News does for us and the Community Living Leaders section of our website, there are quite few people visiting our website on a daily basis, people not just in our movement but in our communities in Ontario and across the country too,” Powell says.
He adds having the video message available on their website gives people immediate access to it.
The video “gives members and non-members, other interested parties, an immediate opportunity to understand the issue and the scope of the actions that we’ve undertaken to address this issue.”
Community Living Ontario began their news program in 2001.
Although some Community Living associations have resolved their strikes, there are others whose workers are still on strike or facing the possibility of a labour disruption, which would cut off essential services for people who depend on them.
“It’s really important that anyone in that situation is able to know what’s happening on the same front in other communities and what the key messages and actions are related to those issues so they can act in concert and they can solidify their positions and do what’s right for the vulnerable people who can be, and in some cases have been, negatively affected,” Powell says.
